You would have made fun of the comments by doctors in those old Bollywood movies where they use to suggest that taking this patient to a hill-station, a remote area where greenery persists in abundance can help him/her heal. We used to think, “What kind of therapy is this?” right?
But Japan has come with an idea of Forest Bathing & Nature Walking which advocates the suggestions of the doctors, the term is known as Shinrin-yoku. Shinrin-yoku means “living in the forest atmosphere” or “forest bathing.” Japan developed it during the 1980s and since then it has become a mainstay of preventive health care and healing in the Japanese medicine field. Researchers mainly in Japan and South Korea are making this practice habitual for people and establishing a robust body of scientific literature on health benefits of living in a forest and today they are establishing their research of Shinrin-yoku and forest therapy all throughout the world.
The idea of Shinrin-yoku says that; if a person visits a natural area full of trees and greenery all over and walks in a relaxed way he can gain certain benefits like calming, rejuvenating and healing.
For instance; many trees emit organic compounds which support our “NK” (natural killer) cells that are an important part of our immune system’s way of fighting cancer. In the past decades, there have been various scientific studies that have demonstrated and proved the mechanisms behind the restorative/healing effects of just being in wild and natural areas.
This is nature’s own way to cleanse your stress and in return, it just demands you to step in the greenery.
The scientifically-proven benefits of Shinrin-yoku include:
- Boosts the functioning of the immune system, with increase in the count of body’s Natural Killer (NK) cells.
- Reduce of blood pressure
- Reduce of stress
- Improves mood
- Increases the ability to focus, also in children with ADHD
- Impressive recovery from surgery or illness
- Increase in energy level
- Improves sleep
- Overall increase in self-happiness
